You give a mighty shove, and the canoe glides smoothly away from the shore. You paddle to the middle of the lake, from which you can see a dam and a meadow at the downstream end, some rocks that look great for holding a picnic upon (some other time) up one side, and a dome-like pile of earth and sticks, probably a beaver house, near the upstream end.
