Masks

Watch out for counterfeit masks: Buy from the manufacturer or from trusted resellers (not Amazon). Here are some particularly useful recommendations:

3M V-Flex N95 masks. Good for breathing and speaking easily.

GVS P100 mask for extra safety. Roomy for breathing. Great seal. "Bane" aesthetic. Also good on smoky days.

Flo Mask Pro. Designed for a comfortable fit and a wide, easy-breathing filtration surface.

ReadiMask. Strapless and metal-free. Great seal. Can be used in an MRI, or inside a costume. You can wear it folded around your nose, if you need your mouth free at the dentist.

Dräger X-plore 1900 Series N95. Fits some faces that other masks don't. Voice carries clearly through these.

Lutema masks come in sizes for children and small adults (m95c).

Mask quality means nothing if you breathe around it. The quality of the seal to your face is paramount! Quantitative Fit Tests measure mask leakage, which mostly involves how well it seals. When you read these histograms, a large volume of results to the right (in the green and silver range) is good. A significant volume of poor results (red and orange) is a warning of poor seals. That said, if you can tell how well a mask seals to your face in particular, that is more valuable than average results. Masks that do particularly well include 3M Aura 1863+, 3M Aura 9321CN+, Dräger 1920 small, Trident RTCFFP2 S, Trident RTCFFP2 XXL, and Zekler 1502 small. Avoid the 3M AFFM (commonly sold at pharmacies), which is not a NIOSH approved respirator.

N95 masks were designed to fit an average, male, American face. KN95 masks, often considered not quite as good as N95, are designed for Korean male and female faces. If a KN95 seals well and fits you better than an N95, then it is the superior mask!

Here's an in depth guide to elastomeric masks. Although these have a good, flexible seal, and are cheaper over time than disposable masks, they can feel like a risky investment if you're not sure whether they will fit. Here's a guide to which ones fit which faces. The spreadsheet also has a tab for disposable masks. Check the "read me" tab for how to take your measurements.

Social support

Keeping yourself safe is much harder without the support of community. Like-minded people can reassure you that you're doing the right thing when most of society is pressuring and gaslighting you into dropping your precautions. They can share helpful information and resources with you. They can keep you safer, stronger, and more confident.

There are many Covid Conscious groups on Discord and Facebook. Meetup.com has some. Search for groups centered around your geography or a shared interest. TikTok, Xitter, Bluesky, and the Fediverse all have accounts and/or communities to follow. (I would offer examples, but the social media landscape changes too fast to keep them updated.) Covid Meetups can help you find Covid Conscious people and businesses near you. (Be prepared to reach out to a lot of people for just a few responses.) Once you've found a community, it can introduce you to more. Reddit has Covid related subreddits which harbor valuable information and discussions, such as Covid Long Haulers and Zero Covid Community. As usual for Reddit, you can expect some toxic behavior, purity as an excuse for bullying, and astroturf promotion of shady services.

Refresh Connections is the big name in Covid Conscious dating apps. Feeld is also a great dating app, especially for more marginalized people, and you can find Covid Conscious people there.
