Standard tuning. Key of Fm.
Since it's not a bass and
electronic drum set, I like to add a bit of power to the guitar by quickly
striking (and muting) the three lower strings of each chord rather than the
single bass note. I still give most of the power to the bass note; the
rest are just there for flavor. That's just for the early part of the verse:
Where the guitar joins for the chorus, the chords should be fully (and loudly)
played.
I play this on capo 1. So if you don't mind (and even if you do), I'm going to transcribe this as though it were in Em. It's a whole lot easier to think of the chords that way. If you need the original chords, feel free to download this and edit everything up a half-step.
A note on the B7 (thanks to ArsNovaChris): The B (originally C) in this chord is hardly touched by the instruments; it occurs mostly in the vocals. So you can play this more authentically as a D#dim (originally Edim) chord. I continue to play it as B7 because I think it sounds better that way. :-)
Em C This appeared as a moral dilemma Em C 'Cause at first it was weird: Though I swore to eliminate Am C The worst of the plague that devoured humanity Am D It's true I was vague on the "how" C [arpeggiate the C chord] So how can it be that you G Have shown me the light? Em B7 (or D#dim) It's a brand new day, and the sun is high C Am D All the birds are singing that you're gonna die Em Am How I hesitated. Now I wonder why F [Riff: F E D B D Bb A G] It's a brand new day Em C Em All the times that you beat me unconscious I'll forgive C Am All the crimes incomplete: Listen honestly I'll live C Am Mr. Cool, Mr. Right, Mr. Know-It-All is through D C Now my future's so bright and I owe it all to you G Who showed me the light Em B7 (or D#dim) It's a brand new me. I've got no remorse C Am D Now the water's rising but I know the course Em Am I'm gonna shock the world, gonna show Bad Horse F It's a brand new day [softly:] C G And Penny will see the evil me Dm Esus4 E Not a joke, not a dork, not a failure C G And she may cry but her tears will dry Am B When I hand her the keys to a shiny new Australia. Em B It's a brand new day. Yeah the sun is high C Am D All the angels sing because you're gonna die Em C Em Go ahead and laugh: Yeah, I'm a funny guy C Em Tell everyone goodbye C F Em (mute) It's a brand new day [Where the instruments cease for the angelic chorus, you can gently keep these notes going, before hitting the Am hard:] Em B C (Remember, we're transposed.) |------12---13-- (So that's really Fm, C, C#.) |-13---13---14-- |-13---12---13-- |--------------- |--------------- |--------------- [Also, You can softly insert the melody for "She may cry but her tears will dry" on the B string, if you want. It sounds nice.]
